Saatva Classic Mattress Review

The Saatva Classic is our top pick for the best overall mattress in 2022. In this review we will tell you why.

With this high-quality mattress, you’ll sleep more deeply and feel more comfortable than ever before.

It also holds the number one spot in firm spring mattresses and best cooling mattresses, second in best firm mattresses, and fourth in best back pain mattresses.

In addition, the Saatva Classic ranks sixth in side sleeper mattresses.

“Saatva” is a Sanskrit word that means “goodness, truth, and purity.”

It is the goal of this New York-based company to deliver these qualities in their mattresses and the customer experience.

Saatva started in 2010, and now has 17 U.S. factories and 154 fulfillment centers in the U.S., expanding their lineup beyond their flagship mattress to sell a selection of mattresses, beds, and bedding products. Read our separate reviews of their pillows and sheets.

The Saatva Classic Mattress is best for:

  • People who have difficulty sleeping for back pain
  • Those who tend to change positions while they sleep

The Saatva Classic Mattress is not recommended for:

  • Sleepers who like a soft, fluffy, plush or “cloud”-like mattress

  • Those who are lightweight and sleep on their side

The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm Mattress is a luxury firm mattress that has a soft cover and two layers of coils.

It has three firmness levels and two different heights, so it’s a great option for various sleeper types.

You can find the right firmness level and height whether you’re tall, short, average weight, lightweight, or heavyweight.

You can expect the Classic to feel like a spring mattress. Professional reviewers say it will give you a firm foundation for comfortable sleep.

When it comes to cooling hot sleepers, the Classic does a fairly good job. It has an euro-top made of polyfoam and fiber, which is more breathable than traditional memory foam. There’s also a cotton cover that promotes air circulation.

A high-end memory foam mattress is an excellent choice if you share a bed with someone else.

Memory foam reacts to body heat and conforms to your individual shape.

This makes it a great choice for those with sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea.

It also minimizes motion transfer, so it’s great if you sleep with a partner. Both of you will enjoy a good night’s rest with minimal disruption.

If you have back pain, the second layer of the Flex Foam is a great way to help relieve pressure and give you the ideal lower back support.

Unlike other firm mattresses on the market, the Saatva Classic doesn’t come in a box.

Instead, it offers free white glove delivery, which means a crew will come to your home, remove your old mattress, and install your new one.

There’s also a 180-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty.

What Is the Saatva Classic Mattress Made Of?

The Saatva Classic innerspring mattress features a comfort layer of memory foam and two layers of coils, plus additional lumbar and edge support.

The top layer of coils features springs that are individually pocketed to help reduce motion transfer.

The bottom layer of coils is open, like a traditional innerspring mattress, which allows for more airflow and helps you sleep cooler.

There are three firmness settings: plush, luxury, and firm.

The softest setting works best for light sleepers who like a plush, comfy feel.

The next option up is a good choice for those who like a medium firmness, which is a nice blend of support and softness.

The firmest setting is great for heavier sleepers or those who need a more substantial feel.

Luxury Firm could be a better choice for a heavier sleeper if contouring is more important than firmness or support.

If you’re a lighter sleeper who doesn’t need as much firmness or support, the Firm is definitely worth considering.

Saatva Classic Mattress vs. the Competition

Saatva Classic Mattress vs. Avocado Green Mattress

If you’re in the market for a firmer mattress that has springs, you may run across the Saatva Classic and the Avocado Green.

The Avocado Green has a top layer of memory foam and two layers of coil springs with hypoallergenic foam in between.

Both the Saatva Classic and the Avocado Green have springs, but there are several differences between them.

The Avocado is made with more springs than the Saatva, but according to some professional reviewers, the Avocado Green has the feel of a traditional firm mattress, while the Saatva has the feel of a plush soft mattress.

When it comes to firmness levels, the Avocado offers three options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) to meet the needs of various sleepers.

You can adjust the firmness of the Avocado by getting the additional pillow top.

These mattresses are very similar in price with the Saatva Classic at $1,675 and the Avocado Green at $1,599.

If you’re on the lookout for a mattress made of eco-friendly materials, the Avocado Green is the better choice.

On the other hand, if you like the feel of a traditional firm mattress, the Saatva Classic can meet your needs.

While the Saatva Classic comes in sixth, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid is ranked fifth.

Some professional reviewers say the Aurora Hybrid has a more sinking-in feeling like you get from foam mattresses, while the Saatva feels more like a traditional innerspring mattress.

If you’re a heavy sleeper or like the feel of a traditional spring mattress, the Saatva Classic may be a good fit.

What Is a Saatva Mattress?

Saatva began in 2010 as a luxury mattress brand. They offer five mattresses that cater to sleepers of all body types: Saatva Classic, Loom & Leaf, Saatva Latex Hybrid, Solaire, and Zenhaven Latex Mattress. Saatva also makes the Saatva HD Mattresses for heavier people, as well as youth and crib-sized mattresses. In addition to mattresses, Saatva sells bedding, frames, and bases. The Saatva Latex Pillow made our rating of the Best Pillows of 2021.

Where Can I Buy a Saatva Mattress?

Saatva mattresses are available to buy through their website, and you can see them in person at the Saatva Viewing Room in New York City. Saatva doesn’t ship their mattresses directly to either Alaska or Hawaii. It can arrange delivery through a freight forwarder, though. All mattress purchases include free white glove delivery. This includes delivering your new mattress, setting it up, and removing your old mattress and foundation.

How Long Does a Saatva Mattress Last?

Saatva Warranty: 15-year warranty

Saatva is offering a 15-year, non-prorated warranty that covers material and manufacturing defects on its mattresses.

For the first two years, Saatva will replace your mattress if it’s defective. After that, the company will “repair and recover” your mattress but charges a $99 transportation fee to pick it up and another $99 to deliver the repaired mattress.

While the warranty covers indentations in the mattress that are greater than 1 inch, it doesn’t cover normal wear-and-tear, damage you cause to the mattress, or issues resulting from placing the mattress on an improperly supported frame.

A crib mattress, a youth mattress, an HD mattress, or a Solaire mattress, placed on a wooden or metal bedframe will provide years of comfortable support.

The percentage of discount given depends on how long you’ve owned the defective mattress.

How to Return a Saatva Mattress

Saatva Trial Period: 180-night sleep trial

The Saatva Classic comes with a 180-night in-home trial period.

Most mattresses companies in our ratings offer trial periods between 90 and 120 nights, though some offer a 365-night trial.

Saatva recommends measuring the height of your mattress frame or foundation before ordering, as the company notes that one of the most common reasons for an exchange is because buyers want a different mattress height.

If you decide to return the mattress, you simply contact customer service, and Saatva makes arrangements for pickup. Your purchase price will be refunded. Because they’re so comfortable, a lot of people don’t realize there’s a $99 handling charge to return a mattress to Sleepy’s.

How Long Does It Take to Set Up a Saatva Mattress?

Saatva’s innerspring mattresses are not compressed and do not have to expand.

They come with free white glove delivery, a service in which the delivery company sets up your new mattress and removes your old one.

If you would like to limit contact and practice social distancing due to the coronavirus, your new mattress can be left at your door rather than set up in your home.

Do Saatva Mattresses Smell?

As the Classic is primarily composed of innersprings, it shouldn’t off-gas.

The mattress’s thin layer of memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, which means that it contains low quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The manufacturer says this also applies to their other mattresses, including the all-foam Loom & Leaf, with no additional off-gassing occurring when the mattress arrives in your home.

Do Saatva Mattresses Need a Box Spring?

There’s no need, Saatva mattresses don’t require foundations or box springs.

Saatva states that their mattresses are compatible with foundations of all kinds, including platforms, box springs with slats spaced at least 4 inches apart and bases that are adjustable.

The use of a foundation is beneficial to allow airflow, or if you need to raise the level that your mattress is. Read the fine print of the mattress’s warranty for specifics about using foundations and frames.

Saatva claims that since the Classic includes an adjustable pillow top and mattress pad, a mattress protector is not necessary, even though Saatva suggests that you utilize a mattress protector with breathable properties to protect against staining and spills.
