Purple does not sell foam mattresses. Although the Purple beds may use the material, they don’t feel like any memory foam mattress.
This Purple mattress review will discuss design, comfort, firmness and price. It also discusses the main reasons why you should buy or not purchase a Purple mattress.
We also provide a detailed comparison of all models from the brand. This means that we can compare the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
The brief story is that the “hybrid” model has coils to provide additional support. This means that people who are heavier can now sleep comfortably on Purple mattresses.
To clarify, Purple Hybrid was once called the Purple 2. The Purple Hybrid Premier’s two thicknesses were the Purple 3 & Purple 4. The beds have not changed.
We’ll be using their new names in this guide.
This concludes the introduction. Let’s learn more about Purple and Hyper-Elastic Polymer, the company’s mattress topper.

Purple Mattress Overview
Purple was first introduced to the market by their Kickstarter campaign, which was a huge success. The brand has grown exponentially and the Purple bed is still very popular.
While the Purple is essentially the same as the one that was sold via Kickstarter, it has received some upgrades. It has a stretchy, breathable, and increased edge support.
The Purple bed is comfortable and unique, making it a great choice for those with moderate to heavy bodies. Hyper-Elastic Polymer is the most compelling feature of Purple. Let’s get to it now.
Design of the Purple Bed
Purple mattress is made up of only three layers, and measures between 9 and 10 inches in thickness. Let’s talk about the specific layers of the bed.
- Support layer: Dense polyurethane foam
- Transition layer: More poly foam, but slightly more supple this time
- Comfort layer: 2 Inches of Hyper-Elastic polymer
- Cover: Stretchy fabric made from viscose and Lycra.
It is common to see the first two layers of a mattress online, regardless if it is Casper or Leesa, Tuft and Needle or Nectar.
The primary support layer is the dense poly foam. The middle layer acts as a transitional layer. You won’t feel the support core.
Hyper-Elastic polymer is clearly the star of this show. The Purple Hybrid bed also has 2 inches of material.
The CertiPUR US certification is a must-have certification for beds that use poly foam. This certification ensures that the mattress is free from certain chemicals and harmful metals.
How do you take care of the cover?
Purple recommends spot cleaning the cover, but not removing it.
You can use mild detergent and warm water to clean the cover, but only hand-wash it. The cover of the Purple mattress should not be machine washed or dried.
Current Pricing and Discounts
The Purple bed is the best option if you have a tight budget and are interested in a Purple mattress.
It’s $1,149 for the Queen size. This is the middle price range for many consumers who are looking for a mattress-in-a-box. Here is a breakdown of the price for Purple by size:
Purple used to be a firm opponent of discounts and sales in the past. However, the company has made some changes in recent years. You’ll find a slight discount on the bed a few times per year. It was $100 off the Queen-size and higher in the past.
Purple.com is a great place to look for deals. However, we cannot guarantee that there will be any sales.
What is the Firmness of the Mattress?
Would you create a mattress that is soft/plush for the masses? It’s impossible!
Purple is a bed you would make. It’s between a 4-6 on our firmness scale. It is considered a medium. We would place it in the same firmness range as GhostBed or Casper.
You wouldn’t know it used foam. It feels unique.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid’s responsiveness and squishy feel is all you can feel.
It is unique and comfortable.
We estimate that approximately 50 percent of people will like it.
The other half won’t.
Purple Sleeping Positions
Purple is comfortable for any position, whether you prefer to sleep on your stomach, back, side or stomach.
- Side sleepers: Side sleepers will feel the pressure relief beneath your hips and shoulders, but the rest of your body should feel like it’s floating above the bed.
- Back sleepers: Your body should feel buoyant and weightless.
- Stomach sleepers: You should feel buoyant.
- Combo sleepers: Purple is a great choice for combination sleepers because of two reasons. It can handle all types of sleep. It has a responsive profile, so rotating positions is easy.
Types of Bodies That Are Approved
You might be aware that choosing the right mattress is not as easy as simply looking at its firmness.
While the bed may be in the right position for you, your weight will also play a role in your comfort over time.
Let’s take a look at the basics:
- Lower body weight: The Purple is just fine. Support is not a concern for us.
- Moderate weight: The Purple should suit you well.
- Higher body weight: The Purple mattress is not recommended, but Hybrid models have coils so they make more sense.
Review of Purple Mattress: Verdict on the Purple Mattress
The original Purple mattress is a unique and innovative option for those who are open to trying new things. This mattress is great for hot sleepers, and it should be suitable for anyone with a moderate or lower body weight.
Even if you don’t like the Purple bed, you can return it for free. This gives you some protection against any downsides. We really like this mattress.
Purple Hybrid, as we said at the beginning of this review is very similar to the original but has 7.5 inches more coils than foam as its primary support layer. Purple Hybrid used to be known as New Purple 2.
Purple Hybrids: Price
Purple Hybrid was moderately priced, as of last time we checked. Although it was more expensive than Purple Hybrid Premier, it was still cheaper than Purple Hybrid Premier. Here is a breakdown of the price depending on size:
You can see that Purple Hybrid is not something you will buy on impulse, but it isn’t something you have to save your life for.
This bed will be available for purchase at a discounted price from the company from time to time. Check Purple.com for the most current offers.
Inside the Mattress
- Support layer: 7.5 inch pocketed coils
- Transition layer: A thin strip of poly foam that covers the coils.
- Comfort layer: It has 2 inches Hyper-Elastic Polymer, just like the original.
- Covers: Also available in viscose and polyester.
Purple Hybrid, as you can see is basically a Purple bed with coils.
It basically eliminates all the negatives of the original Purple Hybrid bed because the coils provide support for people who are heavier than the original.
However, the coils allow for motion to be transferred freely. It doesn’t.
All tests have shown that Purple Hybrid is able to limit cross-mattress motion because it uses pocketed coils instead of one large innerspring unit. Purple Hybrid should work well for even sensitive and light sleepers.
The coils provide support and increase airflow. But why would Purple want to keep the transition layer of poly foam?
It is there to make sure that sleepers don’t feel the coils underneath the main comfort layer. The poly foam is not felt. The foam is CertiPUR US certified.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are very responsive.
This mattress is 2 inches thick with Hyper-Elastic Polymer. Because it is the same material we used above, it will feel the same as the previous mattress. This will make it a great bed for sweaty and hot sleepers.
This mattress has a lot more airflow than a standard foam mattress. Hyper-Elastic Polymer is not all that it is. Airflow circulation is improved by the addition of pocketed coils.
Analysis of Firmness
Purple Hybrid, previously known as New Purple 2.0, has a similar structure to the Purple bed but is firmer.
Purple Hybrid is rated between a 6 and 8 by us.
This puts it somewhere in the middle of a medium-to-firm range.
It’s suitable for any sleeping position, but we think it is the best Purple bed for back and stomach sleepers.
It’s also the firmest bed available by the company.
We don’t want you to think Purple Hybrid’s mattress is too firm.
It is just firmer than other beds in this review.
Does it Feel Different?
All Purple beds feel almost identical because they all use the same comfort layer (aka Hyper Elastic Polymer).
Although the firmness of the beds will vary, the feeling will remain almost the same.
You will feel like you are sleeping on an upside-down silicone ice tray. Although it sounds strange, Purple Hybrid is a very comfortable mattress.
Discussion on Approved Sleeping Styles
We want to be clear: Most people are able to sleep in any position on Purple Hybrid.
However, we still want them to be a little more comfortable.
- Side sleepers: Side sleepers are fine, provided you understand that this mattress is firm.
- Back sleepers: Purple Hybrid is their best choice for back sleepers.
- Stomach sleepers: Similar to back sleepers. It is firmer and more supportive.
- Combo sleepers: It’s possible. It’s fine if you are a dominant side-sleeper, but it isn’t technically a mattress for side sleepers.
One caveat to this section is that your body weight should be included in the equation. Let’s talk about Purple Hybrid body weight.
Will Purple Hybrid Work For All Body Types?
It turns out that the answer is yes. People with a lower body mass will feel comfortable as well as those with a moderate or high body weight.
People with lower bodyweight will find the bed more firm than those with higher bodies.
However, as long as that is known, there are no issues with the support aspect of the bed.
Combining the Hyper-Elastic polymer and pocketed coils measuring 7.5 inches, you get a lot of support in both directions.
This mattress will make most people feel like they are floating on it. It is a very unique, but extremely comfortable sensation.
Review Verdict for Purple Hybrid
We don’t need to say more. This mattress is a great choice. It offers good support, but still has 2 inches of Hyper Elastic Polymer. Purple Hybrid is comfortable in all sleeping positions, however, our team gives it a firmness rating of 6-8.
This model was previously called New Purple 3 or New Purple 4, as though they were completely different beds. In reality, the only thing that separated Purple 3 from 4 was the thickness of Hyper Elastic Polymer.
New Purple 3 was 3 inches long and New Purple 4 had 4. They were almost identical with the same firmness and feel.
Purple decided to merge the models and give them the name Purple Hybrid Premier.
What is the Price of Purple Hybrid Premier?
We love the Hybrid Premier but we don’t like its price. The price of Purple 3 and Purple 4 (older names) is not the same.
For a Queen-sized bed, the 3-inch and 4-inch models cost approximately $2,200 and $3,000 respectively. Below is a complete pricing table for all sizes.
Purple will sometimes offer Hybrid Premier sales, just like the other models.
Purple.com has the latest deals. However, the price will be the same as it was today because Purple doesn’t like running promotions.
Construction of Purple Hybrid Premier
You can get between 3 and 4 inches Hyper-Elastic Polymer when you buy the Purple or Hybrid models.
Purple Hybrid Premier’s inside is the same as all the others, with pocketed coils and foam. You’ll experience a similar overall feeling.
Both models will give you a feeling of weightlessness that is hard to describe. This feeling will be more intense in the 4-inch model, but it’s also available in the 3-inch model.
Apart from the high price, the biggest problem with Purple Hybrid Premier is the weight of the bed.
A King-sized mattress costs around 200 pounds. You might want to delay purchasing a mattress if you are moving soon.
How Firm is the Bed?
However, the firmness of your model will vary depending on whether it is a 3-inch or 4-inch model. Both models are close to true medium in firmness. They are both a 4 or 6.
However, the bed will feel softer if you are heavier than your body weight.
Purple Hybrid Premier will feel softer to someone who is heavier than someone who is moderately-weight.
However, this phenomenon is not exclusive to Purple. It’s a subjective measure of firmness.
Analyse of Body Types and Sleeping Positions
This is the short version: Purple Hybrid Premier should work in any position.
The Purple Hybrid Premier is a comfortable bed that’s firm enough to not alienate anyone.
- Side sleepers: Purple 3 and Purple 4 are fine.
- Back sleepers: It’s a supportive bed that will work well for you, but it is not very firm. It is in the middle of firmness.
- Stomach sleepers: Similar comment for back sleepers. While you should feel supported, it is not as firm or as strong as Awara and other models from Saatva.
Purple Hybrid Prime is suitable for those with low, moderate and high body weights. It has coils to support it.
Review Verdict: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and 4
We think it’s worth it if you have the means to afford it.
As long as you are open to Hyper-Elastic Polymer’s uniqueness.
Hybrid Premier is a top-rated innerspring mattress, surpassing Brentwood Oceano and Bear Hybrid.
Other Factors to Consider
The story of Purple mattresses is not just about comfort and design.
Other elements like temperature and motion transfer should also be considered.
Purple mattresses have the greatest advantage of regulating your sleep temperature.
The beds are not just cold because they have a cooling textile.
The beds pull in airflow to keep you at a neutral level.
These mattresses are temperature neutral in that they can be used at any temperature.
We don’t think anyone will be heating up on Purple mattresses, no matter how much they cost.
Although Purple beds aren’t made with a lot of foam they still do a great job of stopping motion transfer. All of our tests showed that motion from one side of the bed does not travel to the other.
It doesn’t matter what Purple mattress you choose, as they all offer the same motion suppression.
This is something you need to do if you are sharing a bed with someone, especially if one of your partners is a light sleeper or wakes easily.
We expect other factors, such as pillows and sheets, to have a greater impact on your sleep than motion transfer through your bed.
The Purple beds have a thick foam liner that provides extra support around the edges. Because of the increased edge support, Purple beds are great for sharing a smaller bed.
Although it won’t be quite as extreme as the Beautyrest mattresses of high quality, it is still very good.
We don’t recommend that couples sleep on Full-sized mattresses or Queens, but we doubt the perimeter support will cause you too much grief.
The primary differences between Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid mattresses are in design, firmness and support.
Let’s take a look at each of them individually in this section.
The primary differences between Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid mattresses are in design, firmness and support. Let’s take a look at each of them individually in this section.
The support layer is what makes Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid different. The Purple Hybrid bed is made up of two layers of poly foam measuring approximately 7.5 inches. The Hybrid model contains 7.5 inches of coils.
The Hybrid model will provide more support, bounce and airflow while the original Purple bed will dampen movement slightly.
The support layer is not important. Both beds are 2 inches thick of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
Our team gives the Purple bed a rating of 4 to 6, and the Hybrid model a rating of 6 to 8. This means that the Purple mattress is more comfortable than the Hybrid model and is therefore better suited for side sleepers with a moderate weight.
If you sleep on your stomach or back most of the night, any bed will work. However, you’ll probably prefer Purple Hybrid’s firmness profile.
We don’t have any support concerns for people who are lighter or more moderately sized, but we cannot recommend the Purple bed to anyone with a heavier body.
We think Purple Hybrid is a better choice for people who are heavier because of the 7.5 inch coils.
The Hybrid bed will cost you a lot more than the original. The Queen beds should be at least $500 apart.SHOP PURPLE MATTRESS
The main difference between the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid models lies in their design. This is also true for the Purple Hybrid Premier. The feel will not change, despite other factors.
Purple has a 7.5-inch foam base. Hybrid Premier comes with the coils we’ve spoken of several times in this review.
The comfort layer is what makes the Purple bed and Hybrid Premier so different.
Purple beds have 2 inches of material while Hybrid Premier can hold 3 to 4 inches. The more Hyper elastic polymer you have, the lighter you will feel.
They are very similar in terms of firmness. They are placed around a 4 to 6
People with higher bodyweight will find the coils of Hybrid Premier more supportive.
This comparison section doesn’t even need to include exact prices. It’s worth noting that Purple Hybrid Premier is approximately $1,000 cheaper than Purple Mattress.
Purple’s current prices are worth checking to see if they have any sales.SHOP PURPLE MATTRESS
Both Purple mattresses have coils, but they differ in price and firmness. Let’s talk about those two points.
- Purple Hybrid: Two inches of Hyper-Elastic polymer. This gives it a profile between 6 and 8. This is because there’s less material between your sleeper and your firm coil supports.
- Hybrid Premier: Hyper-Elastic polymer is 3 to 4 inches thick. This creates a profile of “medium” firmness that we consider to be between a 4 and 6.
Hybrid Premier 3 & 4 are more expensive than the Hybrid Premier 3 & 4. The Hybrid model is much more affordable. Purple’s Hybrid Premier 4 bed is the most expensive, at around $3,000 for a Queen.SHOP PURPLE MATTRESS
