Nest Bedding History
Nest Bedding was established in 2011.
Unlike a lot of bed-in-a-box brands, Nest Bedding does have physical locations in:
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco bay area
- New York
They are a family owned, factory direct company, who make all of their mattresses here in the USA.
So, if you are looking for an American made mattress, from a company known for their quality and customer service, it’s worth taking a look at Nest Bedding.
Nest Bedding Unboxing
The Alexander Signature hybrid came shipped in two boxes, actually.
The box below was actually inside a standard brown shipping box, for added protection.
Since this is a hybrid mattress, it weighs significantly more than your standard memory foam mattress.
This queen size in particular had an estimated weight of 115 lbs listed on the shipping box.
We recommend either having 2 men, or perhaps a wheel dolly to help you move the Alexander Signature hybrid to your desired location.
Here is a photo of how the mattress comes out of the box, before cutting the plastic.
Alexander Signature Hybrid Medium Cover
The cover of the Alexander Signature hybrid is designed for both pressure relief, and adequate airflow.
The cover is made of a blend of polyester and cotton.
Quilted to 1/4 inch of gel-infused memory foam and using Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric, this cover was soft, and cool to the touch.
The cover can not be completely removed, so it would need to be spot cleaned.
However, the cover can be unzipped to access the first 3″ layers of foam.
During your trial period, if you decide you would rather try a different firmness level, you can simply remove the foam layer, and replace it with a different firmness level.
This also allows to just purchase a new foam layer years down the road, versus having to buy a whole new mattress.
Pretty neat, huh?
Next, let’s take a look at the layers of the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature hybrid.
Alexander Signature Hybrid Layers
The Alexander Signature hybrid has 4 layers underneath the cover.
3″ 3.5 lb. – 4 lb. TitanChil Endurance Foam®
TitanChil Endurance Foam® is a polyurethane foam, designed to respond quickly to your body movement.
This layer provides your body with a very nice feeling of pressure relief.
1” polyurethane foam, 3-lb. density
This layer is between the TitanChil Endurance Foam® and the pocketed coil system.
The purpose behind this layer is to smoothly transition your body from a soft foam layer, to a more firm layer made up of coils.
Using punched holes in the polyurethane foam, this is designed to maximize airflow and breathability.
8″ Quantum Edge Pocketed Support Coils
Next up is the 8″ of pocketed coils.
This adds most of the height, and support of your Alexander Signature hybrid mattress.
The coils have been reinforced for better edge support on your mattress – making this a good choice for couples.
The coil system is also responsible for the overall firmness of your Nest Bedding mattress.
1″ 3 lb. Base Support Foam
The final layer of the Alexander Signature hybrid mattress is 1″ of base support foam.
This layer is basically to support the pocketed coil system above them.
It does offer some additional overall support to the mattress, however this is not a layer that you will actually “feel”.
All of the foams used in the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature hybrid mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.
What this means for you, is that you can rest easy, knowing that your mattresses are:
- Made without ozone depleters
- Made without PBDE flame retardants
- Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals.
- Made without formaldehyde
- Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
- Made without chlorofluorocarbons
- Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
- Performance tested
Alexander Signature Hybrid Mattress Sinkage
The photo below shows the amount of sinkage the Alexander Signature hybrid had, while I was applying a good amount of pressure.
Keep in mind, this the medium firmness option.
What I found with the Alexander Signature hybrid, was the soft cover seemed to sink in a little, but then you hit the firmer part of the mattress.
Alexander Signature Hybrid Edge Support
This is where this mattress really excels to me.
Memory foam mattresses are notorious for having a weak edge support.
However, with a hybrid having a pocketed coil system also, this provides stability all the way around the mattress.
So, if you like to sleep close to the edge. Or, perhaps sleep with a partner, then you can appreciate what the Alexander Signature hybrid has to offer; in terms of edge support.
Alexander Signature Hybrid Motion Transfer
This is where a lot of hybrid models will under perform.
Having a coil system typically makes a mattress a little more “bouncy”.
So, it is easy to disturb your partner sleeping next to you.
With that being said, the Nest Bedding Alexander hybrid did a great job with this.
My wife is a lighter sleeper than I am, and I am known to toss and turn a lot.
Not once was there a complaint of me disturbing her, or waking her.
This was really impressive for a hybrid, as I was expecting this to be a slight issue during our testing.
Multiple Firmness Options Available
Nest Bedding offers 3 different variations of their Alexander Signature hybrid.
This is great, since not all people like the same feel of a mattress.
Additionally, not everyone likes the feel of a memory foam mattress, with no coil system at all.
So, to remedy the situation, Nest Bedding constructed a hybrid mattress suitable for anyone.
This is the softest of the 3 options available.
Though we did not test a plush model ourselves, those who did seem to rate it at around a 3 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
This is the model we tested.
If you are looking a mattress model pretty much right in the middle (5 out of 10), then the medium option would be a great choice for you.
Again, Nest Bedding did a great job at integrating the best of both worlds (memory foam and coils) with their medium model.
This is the firmest option of the 3, coming in at around a 7 out of 10.
If you prefer a firmer mattress model, this would be a great choice for you.
Split Feels for King and Cal King Sized Mattresses
Another unique feature that Nest Bedding offers with their Alexander Signature hybrid mattress, is the option of a split mattress for both king and California king size.
What this means is that you can have 2 different firmness options within the same mattress.
If you prefer a softer mattress for example, but your partner likes firm, your Alexander Signature can be customized to have your side soft, and theirs firm.
This is a very unique option that most brands do not offer.
Nest Bedding goes a step above to ensure that their mattress is everything you’re looking for, to get a good nights rest.
How you sleep will determine which mattress firmness would be best for you.
For the purpose of this review, I will be speaking specifically about the medium option of the Alexander Signature hybrid mattress.
If you sleep on your back, with the Alexander Signature hybrid mattress you will find that you feel fully supported.
There is a slight sinkage from the cover initially, but once you reach the firmer layers of the mattress, you will see that your body weight is evenly distributed across the mattress.
What’s great about this, is that you don’t feel any unneeded pressure on any parts of your body.
If you are a side sleeper, you will want to look at a softer mattress.
The plush option of the Alexander Signature hybrid will be a better fit for you than the medium.
People who tend to sleep on their side with firmer mattress models have a tendency to fill a little bit of pressure in their joints; specifically hips, shoulders and back.
For this reason, either a memory foam mattress, or a plush style hybrid usually works better.
If you are a stomach sleeper like me, then you will want a medium to firm model of the Alexander Hybrid.
The issue with stomach sleepers and softer mattresses, is the awkward arch it can put in your spine.
The medium model was the perfect fit for me, as a stomach sleeper.
Mainly because I prefer a softer mattress, but not so soft it causes back pain for me.
So, having a soft top, with a pocketed coil system underneath, the Alexander Signature hybrid medium gave me the perfect balance.
Which Model is Best for My Bodyweight?
Your bodyweight can play a factor on which mattress model would be best for you.
If you weigh less than 130lbs, then a soft-medium would probably be your best bet.
You will get the comfort, along with the support and stability at these options, due to you being such a lightweight person.
We consider average weight to be anywhere between 130lbs – 230lbs.
If you fall in this category, it will come down to personal preference when it comes to the Alexander Signature hybrid.
If you prefer soft, go Plush. If you like firm, go firm.
For myself personally, I am 205lbs, and medium was perfect.
If you weigh more than 230lbs, then the firmer model of the Alexander Signature hybrid would most likely be the best suit for you.
If you prefer softer, I would recommend at least sticking to medium.
You don’t to prevent sagging in the mattress, so any lighter than medium may cause issues in the future.
