How load, heat, and movement interact overnight
Feet, heels, calves, and the backs of the legs can carry steady load when the body stays in one position. A rigid top leaves that load concentrated, while a very deep cradle can hold heat, moisture, and a body-shaped hollow. The hollow also increases the effort needed to turn or sit up.
At the edge, a weak perimeter drops under seated weight and makes the move to standing longer. Surface contour, recovery speed, airflow, and edge stability are the useful shopping measures.
What to look for in the surface and edge
Use contouring without a deep lower-body hollow
A two to three inch comfort layer can spread contact beyond the heels and calves without swallowing the legs. Latex and responsive polyfoam recover quickly, while memory foam gives a deeper cradle and holds its shape longer. Put either over a transition layer firm enough to stop the pelvis and thighs before they reach the core.
Look for at least 1.8 lb/ft³ polyfoam there. Test after twenty minutes, when warm material has softened, and make sure a turn still feels like one movement instead of a climb.
Treat the edge and finished height as one system
Measure from the floor to the top of the complete bed, including the frame and any topper. Seated at the edge, the feet should rest securely on the floor without the mattress dropping sharply under the thighs. A foam encasement or a perimeter row of thicker coils gives a firmer place to sit and push from.
Very tall mattresses add climb, while low setups demand more effort to rise from. A different frame can be the cheaper fix when the surface itself still distributes load well.
Keeping weight off the feet
The most useful thing on this page may also be the cheapest. Heavy bedding resting on sensitive feet is a common and easily solved problem: a bed cradle or simply leaving the top sheet untucked removes contact entirely.
Similarly, a pillow under the calves lifts the heels clear of the surface for back sleepers. Try both before buying a mattress.
Covers, phase-change fabric and what a topper can do
The cover is the first thing your skin touches, and a thin, loosely woven cover breathes better than a thick quilted one. Phase-change fabrics feel cool to the hand in the showroom because they absorb heat as they warm through, but their capacity is limited and they give the heat back later.
Before replacing a mattress, try the cheap fix: swap a waterproof protector for a breathable one, move to lighter bedding, and add a two-inch latex or ventilated topper. That often solves it for a tenth of the cost.

Side sleeping
Side sleeping moves direct load away from the heels but puts the ankles and knees close together. A pillow between them is the simplest way to separate those contact points.
Back sleeping

Combination sleeping

Testing pressure, temperature, and movement separately
A deep foam can spread load yet hold heat and resist a turn. A firm hybrid can move air yet concentrate load at the heels. Judge all three properties together after the surface has warmed under the body. The tradeoff appears only after time.
Buying memory foam for the contouring alone
The pressure relief suits the condition and the heat retention works against it. If you want foam, the cooling construction has to be real rather than a marketing layer on the cover.
Skipping the topper and protector before replacing the whole bed
A rubber-backed waterproof protector traps heat as well as anything in the mattress. Replacing it with a breathable one, and adding a ventilated latex topper, fixes many hot sleepers for a small fraction of the price of a new bed. Try that first, then decide.
