Why side sleeping gets harder at higher body weight

What the wrong mattress does to a heavier side sleeper's night

On a surface that is too soft, the hip sinks first and furthest, the waist follows, and the lower back twists to keep shoulders and pelvis in the same plane. That shows up as a sore lower back in the morning and a dead arm at night.

Comfort layer depth: why 2 inches is not enough

A 2-inch comfort layer over coils is a reasonable build for a 150 lb side sleeper. At 230 lb and up, the shoulder pushes straight through it and rests on the coils, and the hip does the same. You need 3 to 4 inches of comfort material that does not collapse under load: memory foam at 4 lb/ft³ or higher, polyfoam at 2 lb/ft³ or higher, or latex.

Support core: coil gauge, height and count

The support layer decides whether the hip stops sinking at the right depth. Look for pocketed coils of 13 to 14 gauge, at least 8 inches tall, in a queen count of 800 or more. Thin 15 or 16 gauge coils let the pelvis through.

Heavier gauge holds the hip up and gives the comfort layer a firm floor to work against. All-foam cores work only if the base foam is at least 2 lb/ft³ and the bed is 12 inches or taller.
