How concentrated load breaks up the night

What to look for in a mattress for joint pain

Pressure distribution matters more than the firmness label

Firmness describes the first pushback you feel. It does not show where that pushback lands. A flat, very firm surface can keep the spine straight while forcing the shoulder, outer hip and heel to carry sharp peaks of load. A medium surface with good contouring brings the ribs, waist and thighs into contact, enlarging the area that carries you.

That is the result to shop for. Lie still for at least ten minutes and notice whether one joint becomes louder while nearby areas barely touch the bed.

Comfort layer depth without bottoming out

Most adults with several sore contact points need about three inches of usable comfort material. Side sleepers and heavier bodies may need four. Depth alone is not enough. Memory foam around 4 lb/ft³ or latex can let a joint settle without crushing flat. Soft polyfoam below 1.8 lb/ft³ is more likely to bottom out or soften early.

Under the comfort layer, a one to two inch transition layer should slow the hip before it meets the coils. If the joint reaches a hard layer, the plush cover above it has done nothing useful.

Zoning at the hip and shoulder

Useful zoning is not simply a stiff strip across the middle. The shoulder needs the easiest path into the bed, the hip needs controlled give, and the waist needs steady contact between them. In a pocketed coil unit, that can mean roughly 15 gauge coils near the shoulder and 13.5 to 14 gauge through the centre third.

Foam zoning can use channels or cutouts in the shoulder area. Check where each zone meets your body. A short sleeper whose hip lands on the lumbar band may find a clever design surprisingly hard.

Why very firm can hurt the exact spots you meant to protect

A hard bed limits total sink, but it does so by pushing hardest against the parts that project furthest. Those are often the painful joints. The shoulder cannot settle, the outer hip becomes a pivot, and the knees may press together on the side. The body then twists around those points or rolls away from them.

Support is the ability to keep the larger shape of the body controlled. Surface hardness is only one part of that job, and turning the dial to maximum often makes mechanical joint loading worse.

Try the knee pillow and topper before replacing the bed

For side sleeping, a firm pillow between the knees stops the top leg pulling the pelvis forward and keeps the knees from pressing bone to bone. Back sleeping

Buying the hardest bed for support

Hard is easy to feel in a showroom, so it gets mistaken for structural support. At home it places the largest load on the shoulder, hip and heel. Look for a stable core under a conforming top, not the least forgiving surface available.

Choosing softness with no stop underneath

A deep initial cradle can hide a weak transition layer. After twenty minutes the hip reaches the firmer core and the pressure returns, or the pelvis keeps dropping. Ask for every layer thickness and density, then test long enough for the foam to warm.

Treating every sore joint as the same problem

Shoulder pressure, hip tilt and knees touching are three different loading patterns. One firmness number cannot explain all three. Test your real position and use pillows to remove the knee problem before asking a new mattress to solve what remains.

Putting a topper over a worn hollow

A topper follows the shape beneath it. It can soften a sound, level mattress, but it cannot lift a collapsed centre or restore tired coils. If a straightedge shows a dip, inspect the foundation and mattress before adding more foam.
