By MattressDealsOnline Editorial · Updated September 2026 · 5 mattresses ranked
A mattress changes how independently four pressure points sink and how much each adjustment travels across the shared surface. That single fact decides most of this ranking, and it is why the five
mattresses below do not come out in the order you would get for one side sleeper using the full bed alone.
How we ranked: every mattress is scored 0 to 100 on the same ten attributes. For
side sleeping couples, motion isolation and pressure relief carry the most weight, with edge support, responsiveness behind them,
and each bed is scored on how close it lands to the firmness target, not on being firmest.

Every mattress here is scored 0 to 100 on the same ten attributes. What changes between
one page on this site and the next is how much each attribute counts. For side sleeping couples,
the weighting is:
Motion isolationPartner movement absorption

×4
Firmness0 = plush, 100 = very firm

Firmness is target-scored. It is not more-is-better. For side sleeping couples the target is
5.2 out of 10 and each mattress is scored on how close it lands to that,
which is why a very firm model does not automatically win.
Why two side sleepers ask more of one surface
Two side sleepers put four narrow load points into one mattress: two shoulders and two hips. Those points rarely press with equal force because partners differ in weight, width and where they carry mass. The same top can barely yield for one shoulder and let the other hip pass through it.
Both people also occupy more lateral room on their sides, bringing each sleeper closer to an edge and every turn closer to the partner.
What four pressure points and frequent turns do overnight
Side sleepers make frequent small turns when a shoulder or arm starts to complain. With two people, each correction can cross the bed and wake the other. A soft perimeter pushes both bodies inward, reducing usable width and making that movement easier to feel.
One compromise firmness may also leave the lighter person on top of the bed and the heavier person in a hip hollow. The mattress must absorb motion, preserve its full width and manage two different sink depths at once.
What to look for in a mattress for side sleeping couples
Quiet turns without trapping either partner
Pocketed coils isolate each load better than a connected coil grid, but the top layers finish the job. About 3 inches of 3.5 to 4 lb/ft³ memory foam damps a shoulder turn without creating the deepest body pocket. Latex releases faster but passes a little more motion. Test this with both people on the bed: one lies still near an edge while the other rolls and gets up.
If the sleeper has to climb out of the foam, responsiveness is too low. If the still partner feels each move, the core or cover is tying both halves together.
Use the width you paid for
Side sleepers need room for bent knees and forward arms, so a weak edge quickly crowds a shared bed. Look for heavier perimeter coils, about 13.5 to 14 gauge, or a dense foam encasement around the pocketed unit. Lie two inches from each side and check for a slope toward the floor.
Before paying for a more elaborate mattress, price a king. If the room fits it, the extra width reduces accidental contact and edge dependence. When firmness needs are far apart, a split adjustable base or separate twin XL mattresses avoids forcing one surface to satisfy both.
Comfort layer depth: three inches is the floor
The shoulder has to have somewhere to go, and that somewhere is the comfort layer. Three to four inches of conforming material is the working range for a side sleeper. Memory foam of 3.5 to 5 lb/ft³ gives the deepest cradle and the slowest recovery.
Latex gives a little less cradle and springs back at once. Soft polyfoam works if it is 1.8 lb/ft³ or denser. Under three inches the shoulder bottoms out on the firmer layer beneath, and the bed feels harder than its rating.
One firmness for two body weights
A mattress rated medium feels medium to a 160 lb sleeper, soft to a 240 lb one and firm to a 120 lb one. If your weights differ by 60 lb or more, no single firmness is right for both of you. Pick the middle of the scale, around 55 to 60, and let the comfort layer do the adjusting: a 3-inch layer of responsive foam or latex over a supportive core gives the lighter partner enough give and stops the heavier partner sinking through.
When one partner changes position
Side sleeping
Test together on your usual sides, including the outer edges. Each waist should meet light support while both shoulders enter the comfort layer without either partner rolling inward.
Back sleeping
Two back sleepers are the easy case. A medium-firm surface with modest contouring holds both level, and motion transfer is lower because neither of you turns as often. Spend the money on edge support and coil quality instead.
Combination sleeping
If you spend time in two or three positions, the side-sleeper target is too soft for the other two. The combination pages weigh how easily a mattress lets you turn, which matters more than the deepest shoulder relief.
Mistakes side sleeping couples make
Averaging two preferences too early
A medium mattress is not a fair compromise if one shoulder stays above the comfort layer and the other hip reaches the coils. Test both bodies first. If the workable ranges do not overlap, use two different toppers or a split build instead of making both partners tolerate the middle.
Fixing a hard bed with a thin, cheap topper
A two-inch topper of 1.5 lb/ft³ foam flattens under the shoulder in a few weeks. If you are going to top a firm mattress, use three inches of memory foam at 4 lb/ft³ or more, or a latex topper. It costs more and it lasts.
Testing it one at a time
Lying on a showroom mattress alone tells you how it feels alone. Get on together, in the positions you sleep in, and have one of you turn over while the other lies still. That five-minute test shows motion transfer and edge feel better than any rating.

Start around 52, then adjust for the heavier partner without taking away the lighter partner's shoulder sink. A deep comfort layer over a stronger core handles a moderate weight difference. If one person still bottoms out while the other stays on top, one firmness is not the answer.
Can two different toppers solve a firmness mismatch?
Yes, when the mattress underneath is flat and supportive. Put a softer 2 to 3 inch topper on the lighter partner's half and a thinner, denser topper on the heavier side. Use twin XL toppers on a king so each half can move independently.
Do side sleeping couples need a king?
Not always, but they use more width than back sleepers and benefit more from the upgrade. A king reduces contact during turns and moves each body away from the partner. If a queen forces both of you onto weak edges, more width is the direct fix.
How do I know if my mattress is too soft for side sleeping?
Lie on your side and have someone look at your spine from behind. If it bows down toward the bed at the waist, the hip is sinking too far. Waking with lower back ache that eases on standing points the same way. If the spine runs level, the softness is doing its job.
Is a split king worth it for a couple?
It is if your firmness needs are far apart or one of you wants an adjustable base and the other does not. Two twin XL mattresses side by side let each of you have your own build. The trade is a seam in the middle and separate sheets.
