Build cooling from the skin downward

Start at the cover, but do not stop there. A thin knit containing phase-change material can pull away the first burst of warmth and feel cool at bedtime. Its capacity is limited, so the next layers must keep moving that heat. Wool batting, ventilated latex, or open-cell polyfoam makes a better bridge than a thick quilt of memory foam.

Under that, a 7 to 8 inch pocketed-coil unit leaves most of its volume open. The full path matters more than a cool-touch label on top of four inches of dense foam. Remove a rubber-backed protector for a week before replacing the bed, since it can block the path at the first layer.

Keep the cradle deep enough and narrow enough

The shoulder still needs about three inches of usable travel. Get it from a responsive material that compresses at the joint and releases quickly around it, not from an all-foam stack that swallows the ribcage. Two inches of perforated latex over an inch of resilient polyfoam can provide that travel while holding less warmth than four inches of slow memory foam.

Shoulder zoning also helps because a softer top third creates local depth without making the entire surface plush. Thick all-foam beds fail this reader twice: their solid cores cannot exchange much air, and their deep foam walls increase heated contact around the body.

Nothing in a mattress moves air the way an open coil unit does. Pocketed coils leave most of the mattress volume empty, so warm air under you can move sideways and out through the side panels. Going too soft for pressure relief and sinking into the heat
